Former King Gyanendra delivers political message, predicts public-backed system in 2082 BS

KATHMANDU: Former King Gyanendra Shah has released a politically charged message on the occasion of Nepali New Year 2082, expressing hope that the country will move toward a new system aligned with the will of the people.

In a 14-minute video address, Shah said that while each new year begins with excitement, it often ends in disappointment due to the current political instability. Echoing sentiments from his earlier message on Democracy Day (Falgun 7), Shah warned that the nation remains trapped in corruption and unrest.

Referring to himself as the king, Shah extended New Year greetings to all Nepalis and stressed the importance of restraint when expressing political beliefs. “Freedom of expression is a beautiful aspect of democracy,” he said. “But such expression must be exercised with maturity and discipline.”

Shah stated that no system or ideology should be above the people’s freedom. He praised the patriotism of the Nepali people and criticized the current political leadership for failing to bring about stability and prosperity.

He expressed confidence that 2082 will mark the beginning of a public-supported system that can lead Nepal out of its current political complexities. “A force has emerged to guide the country out of chaos toward peace and prosperity,” he said. “In 2082, I believe the Nepali people will see the establishment of a system that reflects their aspirations.”

Shah also stressed the historical role of the monarchy in safeguarding nationalism and democracy, presenting the constitutional monarchy as a tradition rooted in public sentiment. “The source of state power is the people, and we believe the country will progress in 2082 in accordance with their will,” he added.

He concluded with strong remarks against widespread corruption, accusing political parties of trapping the country in a web of instability while other nations have already advanced on the path to prosperity.
