World Radio Day being observed today

KATHMANDU: World Radio Day is being observed today with various programs aimed at raising awareness globally.

On the call of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the day is marked by radio broadcasts focused on educating people about climate change issues and adaptation strategies.

Declared in 2011 by UNESCO Member States and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012, February 13 became World Radio Day.

According to UNESCO, radio is entering its second century of service as one of the most reliable and widely accessed media forms in the world.

Radio plays a significant role in addressing global challenges, particularly by aiding communities during climate-related disasters such as tropical storms and floods. It facilitates the spread of fact-based information, amplifies listeners’ voices, and airs dedicated programs.

Recognized as a powerful tool for democratic discourse and mass communication, radio reaches a global audience like no other medium. Its role in fostering social diversity and unity, as well as telling the stories of the unheard, remains unparalleled.
