PM Karki set to expand cabinet with four new ministers

KATHMANDU: The government led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki is set to expand its cabinet by appointing four new ministers on Friday, according to sources from the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.

Kumar Ingnam is expected to take charge of the Ministry of Land, Madhav Chamlagain will head the Ministry of Forests and Environment, Rajendra Singh Bhandari will be appointed Minister of Labour and Culture, and Shraddha Shrestha will assume the Ministry of Women, Children, and Senior Citizens.

A staff member at the President’s Office confirmed that a formal letter requesting their swearing-in has already been sent to the President. The current Minister of Land Reform, Cooperatives, and Poverty Alleviation, Anil Kumar Sinha, is expected to be transferred to another ministry, with sources indicating he may be assigned the Ministry of Tourism. The communication regarding this change has also been submitted to the President’s Office.

Currently, PM Karki’s cabinet has 10 ministers. With the addition of these four, the council will expand to 14 members. Initially, Karki had resolved to maintain a 10-member cabinet, but operational challenges prompted the expansion. For context, the previous government had expanded its cabinet to 25 members, including three state ministers.
