UN, India, China, and global powers call for calm and dialogue in Nepal

KATHMANDU: In response to recent violent protests in Nepal, the United Nations, neighboring countries India and China, and several Western nations have urged calm and the resolution of tensions through peaceful dialogue.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his condolences over the loss of lives and called for an impartial investigation into the incidents. He also emphasized the importance of safeguarding human rights and ensuring that demonstrations remain peaceful.

India stated that it is closely following the situation, expressed sorrow over the casualties, and stressed that all issues should be resolved through peaceful discussions. It also advised Indian nationals in Nepal to remain cautious.

China, referring to Nepal as a close friend and neighbor, expressed confidence that Nepal would be able to manage its internal affairs and restore peace and stability on its own.

The United States, European Union, and embassies of countries such as Australia, the UK, Germany, Japan, and South Korea released a joint statement condemning the violence, extending sympathies to the victims’ families, and calling for restraint and protection of civil liberties.

The EU specifically urged an independent inquiry into the deaths that occurred during the protests.
