UML won’t discuss Bidya Devi Bhandari’s membership in Statute Convention: Shankar Pokharel

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel addressed recent discussions concerning former President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s political standing.

Pokharel stated that the party had not expected Bhandari to return to active politics, but had honored her with the prestigious Republic Pride Award on the party’s foundation day to recognize her significance beyond party lines.

He confirmed that Bhandari renewed her UML party membership in mid-July, clarifying that this matter will not be a subject of debate in the upcoming second statutory convention scheduled for September, as the central committee has already made its decision.

However, Pokharel also expressed disapproval of Bhandari referring to herself as the former UML vice-chair rather than acknowledging her status as a former President.

He suggested that such self-identification was inappropriate and did not reflect the dignity of her former office.
