Haircutting training equips students with practical skills

MYAGDI: Beni Community Secondary School has launched a haircutting training program for its students, aiming to equip them with practical skills alongside their academic education.

Under the “We Can, We Will” initiative of Beni Municipality, 25 students from grades 8, 9, and 11 are participating in a 15-day training session tailored to their interests.

The school’s Principal, Deepak Shrestha, said the training began on 26 Jestha and will continue until 10 Asar. Professional trainer Abhishek Shrestha from Beni is leading the sessions.

The training takes place for two hours after regular school hours, starting at 4 p.m. Grade 11 student Suyog Regmi, a participant, shared that the skills gained will not only help cut hair for family members—saving time and money—but could also support future business ventures.

Principal Shrestha noted that salons in Beni often have long wait times, especially on public holidays. If students wish to turn their training into a group business, the school is ready to provide shutter space to help them get started.

“We offered plumbing training last year, and hair cutting training the year before,” he said. “We plan to open a shop within the school’s premises to offer plumbing, haircutting, and wiring services.”

Mayor Surat KC stated that the municipality is actively working to connect education with labor by introducing skill-based training in community schools. Beni Municipality has allocated Rs. 1.6 million for the “We Can, We Do” program this fiscal year, providing Rs. 100,000 to each of the 16 participating schools.

Flexible training schedules in the morning and evening have been arranged to accommodate students’ needs, and approximately 500 students from community schools in Beni Municipality are expected to take part in the various skill-based trainings.
