Sobita Gautam criticizes Oli-led govt for being ‘control-oriented’

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Sobita Gautam has accused the KP Sharma Oli-led government of taking a control-oriented approach and suppressing emerging voices.

Speaking at the House of Representatives meeting on Wednesday, Gautam said the government is overly cautious, intolerant, and has lost public trust, creating a crisis of its own making.

Gautam criticized the government for using the law as a tool of revenge rather than justice.

“The government should have made the law a scale of justice, but it turned it into a sword of revenge,” she said.

She also argued that the emerging political forces, nurtured within the republic, could have played a pivotal role in protecting democracy if they were not being suppressed through fabricated cases.

Gautam further alleged that the government is pursuing a regime that seeks to control freedom of expression and dissent. She pointed out several instances of restrictive policies, including confiscating journalists’ passes, proposing a bill to regulate social media, declaring prohibited areas, and occupying public roads.

“The government is trying to control the House, roads, and social media, but it cannot control the consciousness of the people,” Gautam said, cautioning that these actions are transforming the government into a genuine threat to democracy.

Warning of potential public backlash, Gautam urged the government to act in a way that accommodates diverse opinions and respects democratic norms.

“If anyone is a real threat to democracy, it is the government itself,” she said. “Act in a way that accommodates everyone’s opinions, otherwise, the outcome will favor the people.”
