Bus carrying students crashes in Sankhu; 3 dead, dozens injured

Three students have died in a tragic school bus accident in Sankhu, Kathmandu on Wednesday.

Kathmandu Police Spokesperson, SP Apilraj Bohara, confirmed that 40 students were injured in the crash.

Sushanka Dotel succumbed to his injuries while being treated at Shankharapur Hospital.

Another victim died during treatment at NMC Hospital, and a third person passed away at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, according to Bohara.

Babarmahal flooded as Melamchi water pipe bursts

A burst in the Melamchi drinking water pipe has caused severe flooding in the Babarmahal area.

Water entered the premises, submerging the ground floor of the Special Court and Kathmandu District Court buildings.

As a result, all documents and computers on the ground floor of the Special Court have been moved to the upper floors. The court has also postponed all hearings scheduled for Wednesday.

Repairs begin on BP Highway after flood damage

The Department of Roads has initiated repairs on sections of the BP Highway that were damaged by recent floods, specifically from Bhakundebesi to Nepalthok.

The department reports that work is ongoing on a 13-kilometer stretch, with 8.5 kilometers already completed.

Repairs are being carried out at 14 locations affected by the floods, according to Suman Yogesh, Chief of the Road Division Office in Bhaktapur.

Gold price plummets after three-day increase

After a steady rise over the past three days, the price of gold has experienced a sharp decline today (Wednesday).

The Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers Federation reports that gold has dropped by 2,700 rupees per tola, now priced at 167,500 rupees, down from 170,200 rupees yesterday.

Additionally, the price of silver has decreased by 15 rupees per tola today, now standing at 1,930 rupees per tola.

HoR: Q&A with PM to take place on February 16

A direct question and answer session with the Prime Minister is set to take place during the House of Representatives meeting on February 16.

Speaker Devraj Ghimire said that the program, in accordance with Chapter 9 of the House of Representatives Rules 2079, will be held on that date.

He informed the members that groups have already been divided for the Q&A session with the Prime Minister.

Nepal, India finalize modalities for cross-border transmission line

Nepal and India have agreed on the construction modalities for cross-border transmission lines, paving the way for exporting 15,000 MW of electricity from Nepal to India and Bangladesh by 2035.

The agreement was reached at a secretary-level meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday, where Nepal’s Energy Secretary Suresh Acharya and India’s Power Secretary Pankaj Agrawal signed a memorandum of understanding.

As part of the agreement, two 400 kV transmission lines—from Inaruwa (Nepal) to Purnia (India) and Dodhara (Nepal) to Bareilly (India)—will be completed by 2030.

Bird population increases in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve

The number of birds in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve has increased this year, according to a recent bird count conducted under the Midwinter Waterbird Census 2025.

The census recorded 9,250 birds from 76 species, a significant rise from last year’s count of 5,527 birds across 53 species, the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve Office reported.

The highest count was of the Chakhewa species (1,068 birds), while white eagles, panichaha, chitrangada, and tiktike were among the least recorded, said Senior Conservation Officer Ramdev Chaudhary.

Earthquake jolts Jumla

An earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale struck Urthu Chautara in Jumla district at 11:56 am today, according to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center.

This follows a 4.4-magnitude earthquake that hit Tolijaisi in Dailekh district on February 4.
