KATHMANDU: Hyatt Regency Kathmandu, located in Bouddha, has reached an agreement with its employees to provide minimum wages throughout the hotel’s reconstruction period.
The hotel has remained closed since the Gen-Z protest on September 9, during which the property suffered vandalism, arson, and looting.
According to the hotel management, at least one year will be required to complete the reconstruction work. Following discussions with employee representatives, both sides reached an understanding to ensure workers’ earnings and employment security during the closure.
“The hotel has suffered extensive financial and physical damage due to the vandalism during the protest. It cannot resume operations without full repair and maintenance,” the management said in a statement.
As per the agreement, the hotel will provide employees with the government-set minimum basic wage for one year. It will also continue contributing to the Social Security Fund at the same rate.
The management stated that this arrangement ensures workers’ livelihood and job security even while the hotel remains non-operational.
Once reconstruction is completed, employees who are part of the agreement will be reinstated to their jobs, the hotel added. The management further claimed that a majority of employees have responded positively to the agreement.
However, the hotel said that employees who do not agree to the terms will be subject to a layoff process.
