Sudan Gurung pulls out after failed talks; six Gen-Z coordinators excluded from Ujyalo Nepal

KATHMANDU: After failing to reach an agreement with Energy Minister Kulman Ghising, Gen-Z activist Sudan Gurung has decided to form a new political party.

Gurung had initially planned to merge his group with Ghising’s Ujyalo Nepal Party and include six provincial coordinators from “The Council of Gen-Z.” However, talks held in two rounds on Tuesday did not yield an agreement, and Gurung withdrew.

Consequently, the six provincial coordinators were also excluded from Ujyaalo Nepal’s 51-member central committee.

The provincial coordinators expected to join had included Afsana Banu (Bagmati), Shiva Yadav (Madhesh), Pradeep Pandey (Gandaki), Aditya Aryal (Lumbini), Khemraj Saud (Sudurpaschim), and Prakash Khadka (Karnali). With Gurung stepping back, none of them were included in the party list.

Kulman Ghising submitted the application to the Election Commission for the updated Ujyalo Nepal Party on Tuesday, appointing former secretary Anup Kumar Upadhyaya as chairperson. Ghising intends to officially take over the party leadership after resigning from his ministerial post ahead of the election scheduled for March 5, 2026.

Following the breakdown of talks with Kulman, Sudan has decided to explore other options. He plans to form a new party named Nepal Janasewa Party, with support from Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Sah and former Rastriya Swatantra Party leader Sumana Shrestha.

The party will be led by Gen-Z martyr family member Bhoj Bikram Thapa as chairperson. Gurung’s associates confirmed that the three leaders have agreed to collaborate, with teams of artist Nischal Basnet and RSP leader Ganesh Karki also expected to join. The new party is expected to be officially registered by Thursday.
