KATHMANDU: UML has formally expressed deep concern over the recent destructive Gen-Z protests that shook the country on Monday and Tuesday.
In a statement issued Thursday by General Secretary Shankar Pokharel on behalf of the party’s central secretariat, the party demanded the identification of those responsible and called for strict legal action.
While acknowledging that the protests, which focused on social media restrictions, anti-corruption demands, and calls for good governance, were historic, the UML condemned the widespread damage to public and private property. The party offered condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
The party described the nationwide incidents of arson, looting, and violence on Tuesday as tragic, noting that government buildings, including the Parliament, President’s Office, Singha Durbar, Supreme Court, constitutional agencies, airports, police stations, private property, and rare records, were destroyed, setting back the nation by decades. The UML called for a thorough investigation to determine who orchestrated these destructive acts, clarifying that organizers of peaceful protests were not responsible.
The party also questioned the delayed and insufficient response of security agencies, including the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and the Nepali Army, during the unrest. Following Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation on Tuesday, the UML highlighted the need for a constitutional and democratic solution to the political crisis. The party urged the President to initiate meaningful dialogue to address youth concerns, including anti-corruption measures, ending nepotism, good governance, and employment creation.
The UML further called on the federal parliament, judiciary, provincial assemblies, provincial governments, and local bodies to play a constructive role in defending democracy. The party stressed the importance of coordination and understanding among pro-constitution forces to manage the extraordinary situation.
Finally, the statement signed by Pokharel directed party cadres to remain united, maintain high morale, assist in cleaning destroyed offices and public spaces, promote social harmony, and provide support to affected citizens.
