Ethical code enforced for immigration employees at TIA

KATHMANDU: The Immigration Office at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) has implemented a new code of ethical conduct for its employees, effective from Friday.

According to Office Chief Bishnu Prasad Koirala, the code is designed to enhance the quality and efficiency of immigration services. It encourages employees to interact with service seekers in accordance with international values, principles, and standards of immigration administration.

“The code is intended to promote accountability and sensitivity among staff, ensuring they respect national laws as well as Nepal’s social and cultural values,” Koirala stated.

The implementation of the ethical code is expected to improve immigration services by making them more prompt, impartial, transparent, predictable, and results-driven. “We hope passengers will experience noticeable improvements in service delivery,” he added.

According to the Department of Immigration, the code instructs staff to offer basic courtesies, such as saying “Have a nice journey” to departing passengers and “Welcome to Nepal” to arrivals. Staff are also required to limit their questioning to what is necessary.

Special emphasis has been placed on using respectful language, especially when dealing with passengers traveling to Gulf countries for employment. Employees are expected to refrain from rude behavior and maintain a courteous and polite demeanor at all times.

To monitor the quality of service, a feedback system has been introduced. Passengers can voluntarily complete a survey assessing the service on 15 key points.
