Tourist footfall rises in Dharan’s Ramitedanda

DHARAN: The number of domestic tourists visiting Chindedanda—also known as Ramitedanda—in Dharan Sub-metropolitan City–20 has seen a notable rise with the arrival of the summer season.

This scenic hill, offering panoramic views of Dharan Bazaar, Itahari, Charkose Jhadi, and parts of the Terai, has rapidly developed into a popular tourist hub in eastern Nepal and a favored hiking destination.

Every day, hundreds of tourists—particularly from Dharan, Itahari, Jhapa, Chitwan, and Kathmandu—flock to Chindedanda, drawn by its natural beauty and suitability for short hikes and family outings.

Sudip Shrestha, a resident of Dharan–16 who recently returned from the UK, visited Chindedanda and expressed delight at its transformation. “What used to be a bare hill is now a lively destination,” he said, adding that it’s become a perfect place to unwind with friends in the summer.

Sushila Rai from Itahari was visiting for the first time and was equally impressed. “The cool atmosphere and stunning views here in the summer are indescribable,” she said, noting that while winter draws fewer visitors, summer brings a noticeable surge.

Located just 15–20 minutes by vehicle from Dharan Bazaar—or about an hour on foot—Chindedanda marks a natural meeting point between the eastern hills and the Terai plains. Locals say that tourist activity has been steadily increasing here for the past two decades.

The area once offered paragliding services, which boosted its popularity, but although paragliding has since been discontinued, a number of hotels and eateries have sprung up in the area.

Local hotelier Laxmi Tamang shared that about 300 domestic tourists visit daily during the summer. Traditional local dishes—such as local chicken, Tongba, Sukuti, and Bhattu rice—are especially popular with visitors, with higher demand and better business in summer compared to the colder months.

Entrepreneur Basanti Tamang noted that Chindedanda is now a go-to spot for short day trips. While most tourists stay for just a few hours, some opt for overnight visits.

He added that the majority of visitors in summer come from areas like Jhapa, Chitwan, and Kathmandu, although footfall decreases significantly in winter.

Entrepreneurs also pointed out that the dirt road leading to Chindedanda from Dharan poses challenges, especially during the monsoon and winter. However, the construction of a bridge over the Sardukhola has made access somewhat easier.

The name “Chindedanda” originated from its previously barren appearance when viewed from the north, while locals also refer to it as “Ramitedanda” due to its popularity as a rest stop for enjoying the view.

The area is home to diverse communities including Tamang, Gurung, Rai, Chhetri, and Brahmin, with nearby settlements such as Gurung Chap and Karki Chap.

A few years ago, with support from the Koshi Province government, a view tower was constructed near the hilltop. Additionally, tourism entrepreneurs Basudev Baral and Alina Magar have established the Sech Adventure Park and Resort a short distance below.

A homestay has also been launched in the nearby Tamang community to accommodate visitors. Tourism entrepreneur Baral emphasized that Chindedanda and its surroundings hold great appeal for domestic travelers, and tourism in the area has grown rapidly in recent years.

Efforts to further promote the region are ongoing. Under the leadership of Dharan Mayor Harkaraj Rai Sampang, plans are underway to install a statue of Sumnima-Paruhang—the deities of the Kirat Rai community—at Chindedanda. Mayor Sampang believes that the statue will bring a new dimension to local tourism. Locals are optimistic that with improved roads, greater promotion, and enhanced infrastructure, Chindedanda could soon become a major tourist destination in Dharan.
