Nepali Congress refuses to cooperate on visa probe; parliament obstructed for seventh straight day
The House of Representatives has once again been obstructed, marking the seventh consecutive day of disruption due to protests by opposition parties. Wednesday’s meeting, initially scheduled for 1 PM, was postponed to 3:15 PM in an effort to build consensus. However, the session began nearly half an hour late and was immediately disrupted by opposition lawmakers. Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire urged all parties to help restore order in the House, asking them to express their views along party lines before proceeding with the agenda. Despite his appeal, opposition MPs continued chanting slogans, leading the Speaker to adjourn the session until 3 PM on Thursday.
Supreme Court defers verdict on legality of 52 constitutional appointments
The Supreme Court of Nepal has postponed its verdict on the legality of appointments made to various constitutional commissions during the tenure of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. The court was expected to deliver its final decision on Wednesday, but the ruling was deferred as discussions among the justices remained incomplete. A full bench led by Chief Justice Prakashman Singh Raut and comprising Justices Kumar Chudal, Nahakul Subedi, Sapana Pradhan Malla, and Manoj Kumar Sharma had convened for deliberations. However, as consensus was not reached, the court announced it would issue its decision on July 2.
CPN-UML backs Maoist Centre’s draft to break parliamentary deadlock
The CPN-UML has expressed its support for a two-point draft proposal tabled by the CPN (Maoist Centre) aimed at ending the ongoing parliamentary deadlock. UML Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai confirmed on Wednesday that his party is in agreement with the Maoist Centre’s proposal, which was presented during discussions among opposition parties seeking a common ground to move forward.
Govt must act responsibly to break impasse in parliament: Barshaman Pun
Barshaman Pun, Deputy General Secretary of the CPN (Maoist Centre), stated that the parliamentary deadlock over the visit visa issue can be resolved if the government acts responsibly. Speaking to journalists at the Parliament building in New Baneshwor on Wednesday, Pun said that while the opposition has shown flexibility to end the deadlock, the ruling party and government must also present themselves responsibly to find a solution.
Won’t drop visa issue without final conclusion: Sobita Gautam
Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Sobita Gautam has made it clear that they will not let go of the visit visa controversy without reaching a proper conclusion. Speaking to the media on Wednesday at the Parliament building in New Baneshwor, Gautam emphasized that the visit visa issue is a serious matter for the entire country, and RSP is determined to see it through until all concerns are addressed. She also stated that RSP had prepared a five-point draft to seek a national consensus on the matter, but the ruling party refused to accept it.
Health Ministry warns of disciplinary action against employees not reporting after transfer
The Ministry of Health and Population has issued a warning that employees transferred to federal hospitals and subordinate offices must report to their new postings within three days, or face disciplinary action. Following complaints that some transferred staff had not reported to their new positions and were continuing to work at their previous posts for extended periods, Health Minister Pradip Paudel instructed officials to ensure all transferred employees are present at their assigned locations within three days.
Four rescued after paragliding crash in Pokhara
Four individuals were rescued unharmed by the Armed Police Force (APF) after a paragliding accident in Pokhara on Wednesday afternoon. According to authorities, two paragliders that took off from Torepani in Pokhara Metropolitan City-18 lost control while attempting to land and crashed into the middle of Phewa Lake.The incident occurred around 3 pm, and rescue personnel from APF, stationed at the Fewa Rescue Tower, responded promptly and successfully rescued all four individuals on board.
Supreme Court seeks PM and Finance Minister’s response over budget clause allegedly defying court order
The Supreme Court has sought a written response from Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel regarding a petition that accuses the government of contempt of court through a provision included in the budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2025/26. The court issued the order while hearing a writ filed by Senior Advocate Dinesh Tripathi. The petition names the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Forest and Environment, and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies as defendants. The court has scheduled a hearing for June 22 and granted the case priority status.
Corruption in sewer construction contract: Case filed against former KMC official Pariyar and six others
The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a corruption case against seven individuals, including former Chief Administrative Officer of Kathmandu Metropolitan City and current Director General of the Department of Information and Broadcasting, Pradeep Pariyar. The case concerns alleged irregularities in the contract for sewer construction under the Samakhusi Corridor, from Basundhara to Maipi. Alongside Pariyar, the accused include members of the bid evaluation committee—Directors Rabinman Shrestha, Shiva Raj Adhikari, Basanta Acharya, Namaraj Dhakal, Engineer Janardan Giri, and Assistant Director of the Procurement Unit Uttam Dahal.
Sabina Maskey appointed Acting Managing Director of Nepal Telecom
Sabina Maskey has been appointed as the Acting Managing Director of Nepal Telecom. Her appointment was made as per a ministerial-level decision of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology on Wednesday, through appointment letter No. 3178 of the institution. Prior to this, Maskey had been serving as Deputy Managing Director and Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of the company. She officially assumed her new responsibility as Acting Managing Director starting today.
Floods, landslides, and GLOFs threats push Koshi Province into disaster ‘red zone’
Following torrential rainfall last week, flash floods from the Leuti River washed away a section of the Koshi Highway, disrupting traffic across eastern Nepal. Around 30 meters of the paved road in the Dhankuta–Bhedetar section, under Sagurigadhi Rural Municipality-6, was destroyed, halting vehicles heading to Dhankuta, Tehrathum, Bhojpur, and Sankhuwasabha for over seven hours. Transportation to Taplejung and Panchthar via the Tamor Corridor was also blocked. Authorities later constructed a temporary diversion across the Leuti River, allowing one-way traffic to resume. In Jhapa district, floodwaters from the Mai River inundated the Sugathan area in Jhapa Rural Municipality-3, submerging 22 houses. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology reported that the monsoon entered eastern Nepal roughly 15 days earlier than average. Within the first 12 hours, rainfall exceeded 203 mm in some locations. Heavy rainfall was recorded across Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, and Dhankuta, and further downpours are expected.
Nepal Press Union condemns interim court order to delete news
The Nepal Press Union has denounced a recent interim order issued by the District Court instructing two digital news outlets—Bizmandu.com and Nepalkhabar.com—to delete published content, saying it violates the spirit of the constitution and digital press freedom. In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Union criticized the court’s Tuesday order, stating that it bypassed due process and infringed upon the autonomy of digital media.
Royal throne of King Srinivas Malla displayed at Patan Durbar Square for public viewing
The historic royal throne of King Srinivas Malla has been put on display for public viewing at the Krishna Temple premises in Patan Durbar Square. This traditional event takes place every year on the occasion of Jya Punhi, during which the throne is brought out from the Patan Museum in Mangalbazaar and placed in front of the Krishna Temple. On this day, 32 devotional hymns composed by King Siddhi Narsingh Malla are also showcased — a unique cultural practice observed only once a year.
Over 14,500 EVs imported from China via Rasuwagadhi in a decade
In the past ten years, Nepal has imported more than 14,500 electric vehicles (EVs) from China through the Rasuwagadhi border point, according to customs authorities. Due to the surge in EV imports, a large number of these vehicles are now stranded in the Timure, Ghattethokla, and Rasuwagadhi areas, as many importers have yet to complete customs clearance procedures.
Country will not revert to previous system: Prachanda
Chairman of the Maoist Centre and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has stated that the country will not revert to the previous system of governance. Speaking at a program in Annapurna Rural Municipality-3, Myagdi, Prachanda emphasized that Nepal will not turn back from the federal democratic republican system that was established through a long political struggle and the strength of the people.
Gold prices reach Rs 191,300 per tola
Gold prices have gone up on Wednesday. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold Silver Dealers Association, the price of gold has gone up by Rs 1,300. With this, the price of gold has been set at Rs 191,300 per tola on Wednesday. The price of silver remains unchanged and is being traded at Rs 2,165 per tola.
Chinese Ambassador engages in development-focused programs in Jhapa
Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Chen Song, is on a two-day observation visit to Jhapa district, where he has been engaging in various social, educational, and industrial programs aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and exploring investment opportunities. On Tuesday, Ambassador Chen toured several local industries in Arjundhara Municipality, including a rice processing plant in Muda (Arjundhara-10) and a temporary hut manufacturing unit in Arjundhara-2. His visit continues today with planned stops at a dairy farm in Arjundhara-6 and a fish farm in Arjundhara-10.
Gandaki Province moves to take over local hospitals
The Gandaki Province government has initiated steps to bring six locally-run hospitals under its jurisdiction, aiming to enhance healthcare delivery by addressing persistent operational and resource-related challenges. According to Minister for Health Krishna Prasad Pathak, the provincial government has formed a seven-member task force to assess the current status and feasibility of managing six hospitals located in Syangja, Tanahun, Lamjung, and Baglung districts.
Another rhino transferred to Central Zoo from Chitwan
Chitwan National Park has transferred another rhinoceros to the Central Zoo in Jawalakhel. The female rhino named Puja, approximately 30 months old, was brought to the zoo on Wednesday following a decision by the Ministry of Forests and Environment to transfer two rhinos from the park. Just a few days earlier, a 23-month-old male rhino named Maila had been moved to the zoo. Though both rhinos were initially planned to be brought together, Puja had refused to enter the transport enclosure and was sent separately, according to rhino caretaker Lal Bahadur Mehtaru.
Land certificates distributed to 116 landless Dalits and squatters in Halesi Tuwachung
Halesi Tuwachung Municipality has distributed land ownership certificates to 116 individuals, including landless Dalits, squatters, and unorganized settlers. Among those who applied for land acquisition, 18 landless Dalits, 4 squatters, and 94 unorganized settlers were officially registered in the land records system and received their certificates on Tuesday. Mayor Bimala Rai informed that the second phase of the process has begun to provide land certificates to additional landless and unorganized settlers.
