KATHMANDU: Chitwan National Park has transferred another rhinoceros to the Central Zoo in Jawalakhel.
The female rhino named Puja, approximately 30 months old, was brought to the zoo on Wednesday following a decision by the Ministry of Forests and Environment to transfer two rhinos from the park.
Just a few days earlier, a 23-month-old male rhino named Maila had been moved to the zoo. Though both rhinos were initially planned to be brought together, Puja had refused to enter the transport enclosure and was sent separately, according to rhino caretaker Lal Bahadur Mehtaru.
Puja was rescued and taken to the National Trust for Nature Conservation’s Biodiversity Conservation Center in Sauraha after being injured in a tiger attack on October 27, 2022. She has since been under care at the center.
Caretaker Mehtaru shared that out of six rhinos he has raised, two have now been transferred to Sauraha, two to Koshi, and the remaining two — Maila and Puja — to the Central Zoo in Jawalakhel.
With Puja’s arrival, the number of rhinos at the Central Zoo has now reached three.
