KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) is set to deliver its verdict today (Wednesday) on the writ petition challenging the appointment of 52 office bearers in various constitutional bodies, including the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).
The Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court had scheduled the final hearing on this appointment-related case for May 15, four and a half years after the petition was filed, and set today as the date for the verdict.
The bench, headed by Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut and comprising Justices Sapana Pradhan Malla, Manoj Kumar Sharma, Kumar Chudal, and Nahakul Subedi, has been hearing the case continuously since February 12, 2024.
They had instructed the advocates involved to submit their written arguments by May 30.
The appointments were made by the government led by then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli through an ordinance in 2077 BS, placing 52 members in various constitutional bodies.
Senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi, advocate Om Prakash Aryal, and others filed the writ petition, arguing that the appointment process was illegal.
At that time, only Oli, Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana, and National Assembly Chairman Ganesh Prasad Timilsina were present in the Constitutional Council chaired by Oli. The then Speaker of the House, Agni Prasad Sapkota, and opposition leader Sher Bahadur Deuba were absent from the meeting.
