KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has asserted that Prime Minister KP Oli should take full responsibility for the violent incident that unfolded in Tinkune on March 28.
Speaking during a meeting of the Law, Justice, and Human Rights Committee under the House of Representatives on Friday, RPP Member of Parliament Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan accused the government of deliberately inciting the violence.
“The government provoked the incident. Our understanding is that the violence was orchestrated intentionally,” Pradhan said. “I am alleging that the Prime Minister himself was at fault—he instigated it.”
The protest by royalist demonstrators in Tinkune on March 28 resulted in the deaths of two individuals, with extensive damage to both public and private property due to acts of vandalism and arson.
MP Pradhan alleged that police intentionally fired tear gas directly at the Tinkune stage to provoke the crowd, calling the move “an unpleasant and avoidable incident.”
He further criticized the government’s narrative, which he believes attempted to frame the royalists as aggressors while portraying republican demonstrators in a positive light.
“Would there have been calm if tear gas had been fired during a program attended by the Prime Minister calling for peace?” Pradhan questioned.
“Tear gas was fired while the national anthem was being played. By the end, 700 to 800 rounds of tear gas had been used. This clearly shows that the government was behind the provocation.”
Pradhan also claimed that the chain of command within security forces broke down that day and argued that the Prime Minister, as the head of the government, must take full responsibility.
Calling for an impartial investigation, he demanded the formation of a judicial commission to uncover the truth. “A judicial commission is essential, especially when the government and the Prime Minister appear directly responsible but continue to deny accountability,” he added.
