Kamal Thapa: People are calling for democracy with a king

KATHMANDU: RPP Nepal Chairman Kamal Thapa has stated that true democrats should not be alarmed by the idea of a king’s return, emphasizing that the people are not seeking an alternative to democracy but rather a form of democracy that coexists with monarchy.

In a social media post today, Thapa said democracy itself is not being challenged, but rather the current political system that he described as being marred by “tyranny, syndicate rule, and loot in the name of democracy.”

He argued that people desire a dignified and accountable form of democracy, not autocracy.

“The alternative to democracy is not monarchy, it cannot be. Everyone understands that. The people are not looking for autocracy instead of democracy. The people are not looking for an alternative to democracy, they are looking for democracy with a king,” he wrote.

Thapa also pointed out that in many countries, including Britain, Japan, and Norway, democracy with a king has proven to be the most successful system. He reiterated that true democrats should not fear the presence of a monarch and instead should focus on establishing a democracy that upholds accountability and dignity.

His remarks come amid ongoing debates about the role of monarchy in Nepal, as monarchist sentiments continue to surface in various political and social forums.
