KATHMANDU: Teachers across Nepal, under the leadership of the Nepal Teachers Federation, have announced a series of sit-in protests at the central offices of major political parties, starting today.
The move is aimed at pressuring the government to issue the long-awaited Federal Education Act.
The first protest will take place today at the central office of the Nepali Congress in Sanepa. The federation has also planned sit-ins at the offices of other political parties in the coming days. Protests will be held at the UML office on March 12 (tomorrow), the Maoist Center office on March 14, the United Socialist office on March 15, the Rastirya Swatantra Party office on March 16, and the JSP, LOSPA, and Rastriya Janamorcha offices on March 17. Similarly, sit-ins will take place at the offices of Janmat, Nagarik Unmukti, and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) on March 18
The teachers’ primary demands include the issuance of the Federal Education Act, permanent status for temporary teachers, the creation of school staff posts, and exemption from local government jurisdiction.
They have also raised concerns about early childhood class teachers (ECD), the calculation of temporary periods for pension, teacher promotions, principal appointments, transfers, and performance evaluations.
The federation has stated that the sit-ins will continue until their demands are addressed. Teachers have been advocating for permanent job security and streamlined administrative processes for years, but their calls have largely gone unanswered.
