Venezuela’s María Corina Machado wins Nobel Peace Prize

VENEZUELA: Venezuelan democracy activist María Corina Machado has been awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.

Machado, a prominent opposition leader in Venezuela, has spent much of the time since last year’s presidential election in hiding. This profile by our South America correspondent sheds light on her journey, according to BBC.

She was honored “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela” and “her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

The Nobel Committee chairman described Machado as “one of the most extraordinary examples of civilian courage in Latin America in recent times.”

Although US President Donald Trump publicly campaigned for her to receive the award, nominations had closed in January—early in his second term in office.
