Nepal Bar Association urges protection of lives and national property

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Bar Association has called on security agencies to protect public lives and safeguard national property amid escalating violence during ongoing protests.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Bar General Secretary Kedar Prasad Koirala urged law enforcement to restore peace and appealed to the public to remain calm.

The Bar condemned Tuesday’s arson, vandalism, and looting at its office building, vehicles, the Supreme Court, and other courts. It also denounced attacks on lawyers’ residences and offices, as well as verbal abuse and mistreatment of legal professionals.

The statement noted that the violent incidents, including the burning and looting of lawyer Ajay Shankar Jha’s property, have posed a serious threat to citizens’ security. It warned against pushing the situation toward further anarchy and confrontation, calling on all sides to act with restraint and responsibility.

“The arson and vandalism at courts and Bar units nationwide have left us shocked and pained beyond words,” the statement said. It stressed that the destruction of historic court buildings, along with invaluable documents and judicial records, represents an attack on Nepal’s justice system and traditions.

The Bar appealed for urgent efforts to protect remaining documents and archives, safeguard the judiciary’s property and credibility, and preserve justice infrastructure for future generations. It emphasized that judicial reforms are necessary but must align with national and international principles of an independent judiciary.
