Gaijatra festival celebrated across Kathmandu Valley (Photos)



KATHMANDU: The Gaijatra festival is being observed today in various parts of Nepal, including the Kathmandu Valley.

Traditionally celebrated for eight days featuring a variety of cultural programs. While Gaijatra is celebrated throughout the country, it holds special significance in the Kathmandu Valley.

On this day, in memory of relatives who passed away within the past year, cows—or people dressed as cows—are paraded through neighborhoods. Devotees offer milk, fruits, bread, beaten rice, curd, food, and money to honor the deceased.

The festival is believed to have originated during the reign of King Pratap Malla. After losing his son, the king instructed his queen to organize a Gaijatra procession throughout the city to symbolize the shared grief of families who have lost loved ones.
