Terai irrigation to get permanent fix: PM Oli

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli has reiterated the government’s determination to find a permanent solution for irrigation in the Terai region.

Sharing his optimism on social media, he highlighted that 76.54 percent of crops have been planted in eight districts of Madhesh Province despite recent drought conditions.

The Prime Minister said the government aims to eliminate dependence on rainfall for irrigation starting next year. “This year’s drought made rice planting in Terai fields—our country’s grain storehouse—extremely difficult. Many plants withered due to water shortages,” he said.

Reflecting on his recent visit to the drought-affected Terai, Oli noted that the government declared the area drought-stricken and took special measures to provide relief and assistance to farmers.

“Our goal is to bring a permanent irrigation solution to Terai soon. The smiles of farmers, the greening of the land, and food security are priorities for the country and the government,” he added.

To address the immediate needs, 500 deep borings have been initiated, while the long-term solution involves advancing the Sunkoshi-Marine diversion project. Oli expressed gratitude for recent rainfall that has revived the greenery.

“As of August 8, around 76.54 percent of paddy planting has been completed in eight Madhesh districts. We hope to see green fields across all farmlands very soon,” the Prime Minister said.
