Shekhar Koirala calls meeting after faction leaders expelled from party

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has called a meeting of his faction’s leaders following the expulsion of several key figures aligned with him.

Frustrated that the majority of those penalized by the party’s disciplinary committee belong to his faction, Koirala has scheduled the meeting for 8 a.m. today (Thursday) at his liaison office in Bishalnagar.

“He has invited central members, ministers, MPs, and leaders from his faction,” a leader close to him said. “The meeting will primarily discuss the disciplinary committee’s decision. More will be known after today’s discussion.”

The party’s disciplinary committee recently expelled 18 leaders for one year, including Lumbini Province General Secretary Bikram Khanal, Khotang District President Bishnukumar Rai, and outgoing Kaski District President Krishna KC—all of whom are aligned with the Shekhar faction. His supporters argue that most of those disciplined are from their group.

Shekhar had earlier questioned the conduct of the disciplinary committee during a recent central committee meeting.
