WASHINGTON DC: The Pentagon has confirmed the deployment of 700 Marines to the Los Angeles area to support the federal response to growing protests over immigration raids.
President Donald Trump has defended his decision to activate the National Guard, even as California Governor Gavin Newsom has filed a lawsuit against the administration’s actions.
In what may signal further escalation, Newsom claims he was informed that an additional 2,000 National Guard troops will soon be sent to Los Angeles.
The protests began on Friday in downtown LA following reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were conducting widespread raids across the city.
Trump’s earlier deployment of 2,000 National Guard personnel sparked intense political backlash, with both Governor Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass arguing that local law enforcement was fully capable of managing the situation.
