Stock market sees ‘dead cat bounce’ this week

KATHMANDU: The stock market witnessed a volatile week in the fourth week of Baisakh (second week of May), trading for five days from Baisakh 21 to 25. The NEPSE index fell for three consecutive days before recovering for two days, showing signs of a classic ‘dead cat bounce’.

After sharp declines on Sunday and Monday, the market rebounded slightly on Tuesday and surged on Wednesday. Despite a minor fall on Thursday, the NEPSE index recorded an overall weekly gain of 28.5 points.

The surge on Wednesday was strong enough to offset the three-day loss earlier in the week. NEPSE briefly neared the 2,500 mark but failed to hold ground, closing the week at 2,661.64 points. The index gained 28.81 points overall, averaging a daily increase of 5.76 points.

Trading volume and activity

NEPSE recorded a total turnover of Rs 47.79 billion over the five trading days, with a daily average turnover of Rs 9.55 billion. A total of 118.93 million shares were traded throughout the week, averaging 23.78 million shares per day.

Additionally, 430,547 individual transactions were recorded during the week, with an average of 86,109 trades per day. Around 316 companies were traded daily on average.

Day-by-day market summary

Sunday: The market extended its decline for a third straight session, closing down by 3.44 points at 2,620.39. The index dropped 0.13% with a 25-point fluctuation, hitting a high of 2,645.67 and a low of 2,619.26. A total of 21,195,311 shares worth Rs 9.24 billion were traded in 81,985 transactions across 322 listed companies.

Monday: NEPSE declined by another 9.98 points to 2,610.40, a 0.38% drop. The index fluctuated by 26 points, reaching a high of 2,630.36 and a low of 2,604.79.
On this day, 18,337,942 shares worth Rs 7.63 billion were traded in 65,884 transactions involving 319 companies.

Tuesday: The market showed signs of recovery, closing 1.03 points higher at 2,611.43. NEPSE rose by 0.03% with a 12-point swing. The index touched a high of 2,625.70 and a low of 2,609.57. Trading improved slightly, with 25,42,764 shares worth Rs 8.74 billion changing hands in 80,054 transactions across 318 companies.

Wednesday: The index jumped by 62.25 points to 2,673.69, registering a 2.38% increase, driven by rumors of a new central bank governor. NEPSE fluctuated by 65 points, ranging from 2,611.71 to 2,676.25. A total of 27,245,459 shares worth Rs 10.51 billion were traded in 99,305 transactions involving 308 companies.

Thursday: The market dipped slightly on the final trading day, falling by 12.05 points (0.45%) to close at 2,661.64. NEPSE fluctuated by 32 points, hitting a high of 2,687.38 and a low of 2,655.79. Thursday saw 3,799,091 shares traded, totaling Rs 11.65 billion in 103,319 transactions across 315 companies.
