Nepali Army’s Gorkha-Jitgadhi Unification March begins

GORKHA: The Nepali Army (NA) has commenced the third historic Gorkha-Jitgadhi Unification March starting today.

The march aims to promote the historic route once used by King Prithvi Narayan Shah during the unification of Nepal, according to Major General Ashok Kumar Chhetri, Commander of the Nepal Army’s Ripumardan Battalion in Gorkha.

“The objective of the march is to preserve history by protecting, enhancing, and promoting forts and other sites of historical importance,” said Major General Chhetri.

“With that aim, the trek has officially begun today from Gorkha to Jitgadhi.” The army team is expected to reach Jitgadhi on the eleventh day.

The route spans a total of 305 kilometers. Participants in the trek include representatives from historical military units such as the Kalibaksha Regiment raised by Prithvi Narayan Shah, the old Gorakh, the Bardwani Regiment, the Sabuj Regiment, and the Gurubaksha Paltan, which were involved in the Battle of Jitgadhi.

The army team departed from Hanuman Bhanjyang Chautara at the Gorkha Durbar, carrying the national flag of Nepal, torch lights, and the flags of all five regiments.

The team will reach Satighat in Palungtar, where the flag will be handed over to representatives in Tanahun. Tanahun will then pass the flag to the army team in Palpa.

Additionally, army teams from Palpa and Rupandehi will converge at Jitgadhi to participate in the Victory Festival on Baisakh 7, Major Senani Chhetri reported.

Baisakh 7 commemorates Nepal’s victory over the British East India Company in the Battle of Jitgadhi and is celebrated annually as a Victory Festival.

The trek is also expected to help promote tourism along the historic unification route.
