Eight local governments in Banke collaborate for disaster risk reduction



NEPALGUNJ: Eight local governments in Banke district have come together to enhance disaster risk reduction and management through a newly signed memorandum of understanding (MoU).

The MoU was signed during a coordination meeting focused on inter-municipal collaborations, coordination, and experience sharing. It aims to promote resource sharing, coordination, and effective collaboration among the local governments in disaster management, based on best practices and shared learnings.

The document outlines mutual support among local governments, including humanitarian, financial, and technical assistance when required. It also highlights the need to update existing laws for better cooperation in disaster management and ensures the immediate provision of fire engine services across local governments upon request.

The MoU further mandates the local governments to update ambulance details and establish effective emergency response systems. It includes provisions for arranging essential supplies such as food, clothing, medications, and temporary housing for rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts during disasters.

Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City Mayor Prashant Bista, Kohalpur Municipality Mayor Purna Prasad Acharya, and Rapti Sonari Rural Municipality Chair Tapta Bahadur Poudel were among the signatories.

During the signing ceremony, Mayor Bista highlighted that disaster management is a collective responsibility of all local governments.
