NC general convention to be held before 2027 elections, assures Gagan Thapa

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has assured that the party’s general convention will be held before the 2027 general elections.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Thapa stated that the party is committed to holding the general convention every four years as mandated by its statute and legal provisions.

“We are working to finalize the party’s active membership by next Chaitra to ensure that the general convention takes place on time. Grassroots-level support is crucial in this process,” Thapa said.

While the statute allows for a one-year extension, Thapa clarified that any delay would be limited to a few months rather than a full year.

“According to the party statute, the four-year term ends in December 2025. Our goal remains to hold the convention within this period. However, considering party membership distribution and other logistical challenges, we cannot yet confirm that it will happen on the exact date,” he said.

He added that discussions are ongoing with the party president to determine the necessary adjustments while ensuring the convention is held well before the 2084 BS elections.

Addressing other political matters, Thapa mentioned that the ordinance brought by the government will be tabled in parliament within a day or two and will be passed after discussions.

Regarding the proposed social media regulation bill, he assured that it would not be passed in its current form.

“The bill has numerous flaws. It will undergo necessary corrections and amendments before being approved,” he stated, highlighting concerns over potential restrictions on freedom of expression.
