UML’s Mishra rejects Oli’s call to reinstating House

KATHMANDU: Som Prasad Mishra, a central member of the CPN-UML, has openly opposed party chairman KP Sharma Oli’s call to launch a movement to reinstate the dissolved House of Representatives.

Through a Facebook post on Thursday, Mishra stated that he would not participate in what he described as an unnecessary political step.

Mishra criticized the dissolved House as the most unsuccessful in Nepal’s history, pointing to its failure to pass key legislation during its three-year term and its inability to maintain parliamentary dignity.

He highlighted the lack of oversight over the executive, weak transparency in addressing major corruption cases, and lapses in protecting the state and the constitution. Mishra also condemned the parliament’s role in approving unbalanced budgets and noted incidents of lawmakers embroiled in corruption and ethical controversies.

Given these shortcomings, Mishra said he could not support reinstating the House or mobilizing public movements for it. He added that 25 days after the dissolution, the parliament had failed to raise a significant voice and the popular momentum for such a movement no longer exists.

Mishra’s public disagreement comes amid growing questions among party leaders over Oli’s statements following the Gen-Z movement. Oli had expressed the need to launch a movement to reinstate the House during a virtual meeting with several district committee chiefs on Wednesday, a stance that has sparked discussion and skepticism among senior leaders.
