Nepali Army deploys troops as unrest escalates

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Army has deployed troops in coordination with other security agencies from 10 p.m. onwards, as widespread looting, arson, and vandalism continue to spiral out of control amid the intensifying Gen-Z-led protests.

In a statement issued by the Directorate of Public Relations, the Army warned that certain groups were exploiting the unrest to inflict severe damage on both civilian lives and public property. The Army called on all citizens to exercise restraint and to cooperate in preventing further destruction across the country.

“If such activities do not cease, the Army, alongside other security forces, will be fully mobilized to bring the situation under control,” the statement read. It further noted that the overall security landscape would be reassessed once deployment is underway.

The announcement comes as key state institutions—including Singha Durbar, the Supreme Court, and the Parliament building—continue to burn following earlier attacks by protesters. Violence has also targeted the homes of political leaders, police stations, and media offices, plunging the country into a state of near-emergency.
