TIA staff directed to stay on high alert for VIP arrival



KATHMANDU:  Following the escalation of Gen-Z protests across the country, the government has instructed staff at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) to remain on high alert to manage VIP traffic.

The directive comes in the wake of Monday’s Gen-Z demonstrations, during which government forces attempted to suppress protesters, resulting in the deaths of 19 individuals and injuring hundreds more.

With the protests intensifying on Tuesday, demonstrators began targeting private residences of political leaders and party offices, prompting the airport administration to take precautionary measures.

An official at TIA, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “An informal instruction has been issued. It is likely that leaders, perceiving Kathmandu as unsafe, may attempt to travel, which could increase VIP traffic. Therefore, staff have been told to remain on high alert.”

Authorities at the airport said the measure is purely precautionary, aimed at ensuring smooth movement for officials amid heightened security concerns due to nationwide unrest.
