KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Member of Parliament Asim Shah has tendered his resignation from the House of Representatives, citing moral and political opposition to the government’s violent suppression of the Gen-Z-led protest movement.
In a statement released Tuesday, Shah announced his decision, saying his “heart does not allow” him to continue as an MP while the government uses what he described as inhumane force against peaceful protesters.
“The government’s repression of the Gen-Z movement—resorting to firing on peaceful demonstrators and violating basic civil rights—is against my conscience and my duty to the people,” Shah said.
He added that despite consistently raising youth issues in Parliament and warning of public unrest if their voices were ignored, the government remained indifferent. “Those in power never wanted to listen, never took it seriously,” he wrote.
Shah criticized the government’s response to Monday’s protest, which left at least 19 dead and hundreds injured, questioning the morality of defending government buildings at the cost of young lives. “Is the security of a building more valuable than our children’s lives?” he asked.
Declaring that silence or complicity in Parliament would be a betrayal of his generation and voters, Shah said: “Remaining in Parliament while the government violates its promises to citizens would be a disservice to democracy.”
He concluded his statement by vowing to continue his struggle outside the legislature. “I am now committed to taking to the streets, standing with the Gen-Z generation, with my people, and with the truth,” Shah declared.
