Constitutional expert Acharya: Government has lost moral right to rule amid Gen-Z protests

KATHMANDU: Constitutional expert and analyst Bhimarjun Acharya has said the government’s handling of the Gen-Z protests reflects “the height of incompetence,” adding that it no longer holds the moral right to remain in power.

Speaking to Khabarhub, Acharya argued that the government should step aside. “This is extremely concerning. It is the peak of incompetence. They have no right to stay in power or call themselves rulers anymore. They must vacate and make way,” he said.

Acharya described the youth-led movement as natural and representative of millions of Nepalis. “The protests, whether labeled Gen-Z or otherwise, are spontaneous. They represent the voice of millions who are concerned about the rule of law and good governance. In such a situation, it is natural for people, regardless of age, to worry about the country and its future,” he stated.

He criticized the government for failing to respond even as casualties mounted. “This shows the government’s helplessness, incompetence, and complete lack of accountability,” Acharya remarked, adding that a timely response could have prevented much of the current tragedy.

“Had the government addressed the protesters on time, acknowledging their demands as legitimate, promising action, and apologizing for delays, this level of loss would not have occurred. Now the question remains: how can this damage ever be compensated?”* he questioned.
