Japanese encephalitis claims three lives in Nawalparasi

NAWALPUR: Three people have died of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Nawalparasi (Bardghat-Susta West) over the past one and a half months, according to the District Health Office.

Acting Chief of the Office, Bheshraj Sharma, confirmed that the victims were a 74-year-old man from Bardghat Municipality-12, a 62-year-old man from Sarawal Rural Municipality-1, and a 50-year-old man from Pratappur Rural Municipality-1. All three succumbed to the mosquito-borne disease while undergoing treatment. None of them had received the JE vaccine.

Alongside JE, the district has recorded nine cases of dengue fever this season, with health officials warning of a potential spike in infections in the coming weeks. Local governments, in coordination with health officials, have launched campaigns to search for and destroy mosquito breeding sites.

Japanese Encephalitis is transmitted through the bite of an infected Culex mosquito, which breeds in stagnant water such as paddy fields. The mosquito is most active after sunset and during the night, with infection risks peaking during the monsoon season.

Symptoms range from fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and headache to fatigue and neck stiffness. Severe cases can result in paralysis, seizures, or loss of consciousness.
