International Women’s Day marked today

The world is celebrating International Women’s Day today, commemorating the achievements of women and highlighting the ongoing struggles they face.

For over a century, this day has served as a platform for celebrating progress in gender equality while acknowledging the need for continued advocacy and action.

The origins of International Women’s Day (IWD) trace back to 1908, when 15,000 women marched in New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay, and the right to vote. The first National Woman’s Day was declared by the Socialist Party of America a year later.

Prachanda suggest Gyanendra Shah to form party and contest elections

Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has suggested that former King Gyanendra Shah form a political party and contest elections if he wishes to return to power. He firmly stated that the restoration of monarchy in Nepal is impossible.

Speaking to media persons during a meeting with industrialists and businessmen in Garuda, Rautahat, on Saturday morning, Dahal said history does not move backward. He asserted that Nepal’s constitution allows any individual, including the former king, to form a party and compete in elections rather than hoping for a return of the monarchy.

In a separate context, Dahal assured that he would make every possible effort to resume operations at Shree Ram Sugar Mill in Garuda, acknowledging its significance for local employment and economic development. He pledged to facilitate the mill’s reopening on behalf of his party.

Maoist Center suspends awareness campaign, blames Oli for Royalist resurgence

The CPN (Maoist Center) has decided to suspend its ‘Tarai-Madhes Awareness Campaign,’ claiming that royalist activities have surged due to the actions of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

The campaign, which began on February 25, 2025, has been put on hold, with the party arguing that corruption and other misdeeds by those in power have emboldened royalists unnecessarily.

“Oli has engaged in extremely wrongful activities, and corruption within the government has created room for royalists to resurface,” said Govinda Acharya, Chief Personal Secretary to Maoist Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’.

Teachers back on the streets in protest

The Nepal Teachers’ Association has staged a demonstration in Kathmandu, marching from Maitighar to Bijulibazar as part of the final event of their first-phase protest.

The Association had aimed to mobilize 36,100 teachers from all 77 districts for today’s demonstration at Maitighar Mandala. To coordinate participation, teachers were divided into groups.

Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur were expected to send 7,500 teachers. Three districts under another group were set to contribute 3,000 teachers, while 29 districts had a target of 17,400. Thirteen districts were expected to send 3,900, nineteen other districts 3,870, and the remaining districts 500 teachers.

Earthquake jolts Kathmandu

An earthquake was felt in Kathmandu on Saturday afternoon at 2:37 pm.

The tremor of the earthquake occurred at Dinggye County of Tibet Autonomous Region in China occurred this afternoon has been felt in Nepal as well.

According to the Nepal Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre (NEMRC), the earthquake hit the County with its epicenter there itself at around 2:35pm.

Four international airlines operating regular flights from Gautam Buddha International Airport

Four international airlines have begun regular operations from Gautam Buddha International Airport (GBIA) in Bhairahawa.

This marks a significant improvement in the airport’s operations, which were previously hindered by weather conditions and low passenger turnout.

Currently, Nepal Airlines Corporation (Nepal Airlines), Kuwait-based Jazeera Airways, Dubai’s national carrier Fly Dubai, and Thailand-headquartered Thai Air Asia are conducting regular international flights from the airport.

20 Nepalis stranded in Thailand repatriated

Twenty Nepali citizens stranded in Thailand have been rescued and repatriated to Nepal, the Nepali Embassy in Thailand confirmed on Friday.

The individuals had been taken to Thailand on January 24 via New Delhi, India, lured by false promises of high-paying jobs. However, they found themselves stranded and in need of rescue.

In a statement issued on Friday, the embassy urged Nepalis to seek foreign employment only through legal channels, ensuring proper government approval. It also warned against falling for fraudulent job offers that promise quick and easy money.

CAN unveils annual calendar for 2025

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has released its annual calendar for 2025.

During a press conference in Kathmandu on Saturday, CAN announced the schedules for Nepal’s national men’s and women’s teams, as well as age-group tournaments. CAN Secretary Paras Khadka stated that Nepal’s primary focus this year will be on World Cup qualification.

In April, the Nepali team will participate in the Hong Kong series, followed by a UK tour in May. In June, Nepal will compete in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2.

Urgency to remove obstacles, end violence against women: Foreign Minister Deuba

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Arzu Rana Deuba called for collective efforts to end violence against women (VAW) and all other obstacles on women empowerment.

In a congratulatory message on the occasion of the International Women’s Day-2025 today, Minister Rana bemoaned,” Even at present, women continue to face various sorts of discrimination and violence. We need concerted efforts to do away with these obstacles.”

Acknowledging the progresses achieved in country’s women movements, the Minister lamented that the basic needs of Nepali citizens were still unaddressed compared to the developed nations.
