Employees’ protest at SEBON continues for 15 days, services remain halted

KATHMANDU: Employees at the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON) have continued their protest for the 15th consecutive day on Tuesday, bringing all services to a halt.

The protest began after the Ministry of Finance decided to dissolve SEBON’s Employee Welfare Fund and Security Fund. On Ashwin 2, the ministry had directed SEBON to immediately revoke the Employee Welfare Fund Procedure 2071 and the Employee Security Fund (Operation and Management) Procedure 2075.

Demanding that the decision be withdrawn, employees affiliated with various trade unions have continued their protest. Although SEBON officials, including the chairperson, held discussions with Mahesh Acharya, chief of the Financial Sector Management and Institution Coordination Division at the ministry, the talks ended without any conclusion.

Ajay Dhungana, president of the SEBON Employees’ Union, said the protest will continue until the government withdraws the circular, which he claims undermines the board’s autonomy. He also lamented that despite 15 days of protest, there has been no effort from the government’s side to hold dialogue or address their demands.
