KATHMANDU: Former King Gyanendra Shah is celebrating his 79th birthday today, at Nirmal Niwas in Kathmandu.
On the occasion, his residence has been opened to the public, drawing large crowds of supporters, well-wishers, and monarchist political activists.
Similar to Dashain celebrations, the gates of Nirmal Niwas were opened from 11 AM to 2 PM for the public to extend birthday greetings and receive blessings.
A long queue of people, ranging from children to the elderly, formed outside the residence.
Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chief Whip Gyanendra Shahi was among the early visitors to personally offer birthday wishes to the former monarch.
The former King’s Communications Secretariat confirmed that the residence was specially opened to the general public, supporters, and monarchist party cadres for the occasion.
The birthday celebration at Nirmal Niwas has turned into a symbolic gathering point for royalists and those nostalgic for the monarchy.
As of midday, hundreds had already visited to offer their respects and express continued loyalty to the former monarch, marking the day with ceremonial reverence and traditional Nepali greetings.
