Senior journalist Bhairab Risal passes away at 97

KATHMANDU: Senior journalist Bhairab Risal passed away last night at the age of 97.

He had been receiving treatment for heart and lung-related illnesses at a hospital in Baneshwor, Kathmandu, his brother Puru Risal confirmed.

Born in Bhaktapur, Risal was a trailblazer in Nepali journalism and public service.

He had previously pledged to donate his body to Patan Hospital for posthumous medical research.

Over the course of his distinguished career, Risal was honored with several prestigious awards, including the Jagadamba Shree, along with recognitions for his contributions to human rights and environmental advocacy.

He was widely known for hosting the popular radio program “Uhile Bajeka Palama” on Radio Sagarmatha.

Risal also served as Chief News Editor at the National News Agency (RSS), following earlier service at the Department of Statistics.

Notably, during a national census, he recorded data from the Limpiyadhura region—currently under Indian control.

In the 2048 BS general elections, Risal contested as a candidate from Bhaktapur, representing the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party.

A prolific writer, his notable publications include Sadhulai Suli (a jail diary), Logneswasni, Kehi Mitraka Chithi, and Bhairav Dai.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
