Holi officially begins with the erection of Holi chir in Basantapur

KATHMANDU: The vibrant festival of colors, Holi, has officially commenced across Nepal following the ceremonial erection of the Holi chir at the historic Basantapur Durbar Square.

The bamboo chir, adorned with colorful flags and cloth pieces, was raised on the south side of Gaddi Baithak at exactly 8:33 am on Friday morning.

The festival traditionally begins on the eighth day of the Nepali month of Falgun with the setting up of this ceremonial structure, marking the official start of Holi celebrations in Kathmandu and surrounding regions.

The chir, considered an auspicious symbol, is worshipped with joy and reverence, signaling the arrival of Holi festivities.

Holi, often associated with the arrival of spring, is deeply rooted in both mythology and culture. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil, as narrated in the legend of Holika Dahan, and is celebrated with the throwing of colors, music, and joy across Nepal and India.
