China shuts down Everest area temporarily following Tibet earthquake



KATHMANDU: The Mount Everest region has been temporarily closed to tourists after a powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Tibet on Tuesday morning. The Chinese government has imposed a temporary ban on tourists from entering the area, specifically the region of autonomous region of Tibet.

According to CGTN, all staff and tourists working in the Everest region, known as Chomolungma in Tibetan, are reported to be safe following the earthquake.

Local authorities in Tibet stated that the earthquake, centered in Tingri County of the Shigatse region, had a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale.
