KATHMANDU: A total of 95 people have been confirmed dead and 130 others injured as of 3 p.m. Tuesday, after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake jolted Dingri County in the city of Xigaze in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday (Beijing Time).
The Chinese Earthquake Monitoring Center has reported the earthquake’s magnitude as 6.8 on the Richter scale. However, details regarding the extent of the physical damage caused by the quake have yet to be fully disclosed by Chinese media.
In response to the disaster, China’s State Council Earthquake Relief Department and the Emergency Management Department have activated a three-level emergency rescue operation in the city of Shigatse.
A task force has been sent from Beijing to guide the rescue and relief efforts, as reported by CGTN.
The earthquake was also felt in Nepal but no damages have been reported so far.
