Five high-risk accident zones identified along Tanahun section of Prithvi highway

DAMAULI: Authorities have identified five high-risk zones along the Tanahun section of the Prithvi Highway, based on accident frequency data, in a move aimed at reducing road mishaps.

Chief District Officer Ram Krishna Adhikari said that road accidents in this section have increased following the ongoing expansion of the Muglin–Pokhara road. As a result, efforts are being made to pinpoint the most accident-prone areas for intervention.

A recent meeting of the District Coordination Committee for highway safety and obstruction management instructed the Muglin–Pokhara Road Expansion Project (East and West sections) to identify these high-risk areas in coordination with the District Traffic Police Office and conduct a technical assessment for necessary improvements.

Adhikari also noted that a new action plan for 2082, which includes a dedicated obstruction-removal team roster, has been approved to coordinate and manage road blockages more efficiently across Tanahun.

“We’ve decided to analyze accident-prone zones along the Tanahun section of the Prithvi Highway based on comparative data and stakeholder input, and initiate appropriate safety measures,” he said.

With monsoon activity currently affecting most parts of Nepal, the risk of landslides remains high across various sections of the highway.

The frequency of accidents has risen significantly in specific zones, especially since the highway began partial operation as a four-lane road. This highlights the urgent need for both short- and long-term solutions, Adhikari added.

Meanwhile, the Tanahun District Administration Office has issued a public notice urging people to avoid non-essential travel at night. Those who must travel are advised to coordinate with nearby traffic police or security agencies.

Administrative Officer Bikash Shrestha also released a notice today advising all drivers to exercise caution when traveling on the Prithvi Highway, Dumre–Besisahar road section, and other rural roads in the region. The notice urges drivers to stay within speed limits and to check the road conditions ahead of time due to the risk of floods and landslides during this rainy season.
