KMC launches real-time dashboard to monitor air pollution across Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has launched the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Air Quality Monitoring Dashboard to provide real-time data on air pollution levels from monitoring devices installed across the city.

According to Sita Rai, Chief of KMC’s Environment Management Department, the system displays real-time data on PM 2.5 levels and the Air Quality Index (AQI) from 18 monitoring stations within the KMC area.

“This platform enables users to access up-to-date information about air quality in different parts of the city and is part of our broader initiative to create a healthier urban environment,” said Chief Rai.

The dashboard uses a six-color code to indicate air quality levels:

Green – Good

Yellow – Moderate

Orange – Unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions

Red – Unhealthy for all

Purple – Very unhealthy, with serious health risks for everyone

Dark brown – Hazardous, with potentially severe impacts on public health, especially for vulnerable populations

Deepak Kumar KC, Head of KMC’s Health Department, stated, “The data provided by the dashboard will serve as a foundation for designing policies, budgets, and programs to address urban public health challenges.”

A health alert board will also be installed, using color codes to indicate AQI levels, along with public awareness videos on air pollution. The system will also include updates on progress made in vehicle emissions testing.

Air quality monitoring devices have been installed at locations including Chhetrapati Hospital, Lainchaur, Kalanki Chowk, Balaju Baisdhara Park, Paropakar Women’s and Maternity Hospital, Thapathali, and the Metropolitan Police Force’s regional office at New Bus Park.
