PM Oli challenges former King Gyanendra to contest elections



KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has firmly ruled out any possibility of Nepal returning to a monarchy, stating that the country will not revert to a system where some are born as kings while others remain commoners.

Speaking at the inauguration of Nepal’s largest paper industry in Mahottari on Thursday, Oli addressed the recent surge in royalist activities and challenged former King Gyanendra Shah to contest the 2027 elections.

“If he wants to rise to power, let him contest elections in the mountains, hills, or Tarai. Our constitution does not recognize kings, and no one should dream of reinstating monarchy,” Oli said.

His remarks come at a time when royalist groups, including Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) leaders Rajendra Lingden and Durga Prasai, have been actively rallying support.

The debate was reignited following Gyanendra Shah’s video message on Democracy Day which sparked discussions about the relevance of monarchy in Nepal.

Oli said Nepal will continue on the path of constitutional democracy and development.

“Anarchy, force, and fraud will no longer prevail. Everyone must act according to the constitution,” he said.

During the inauguration of Nepal Pulp and Paper Industries in Gaushala Municipality-1, Mahottari, Oli highlighted the importance of self-reliance and industrial growth. He urged provincial governments to support initiatives like mango farming to boost economic opportunities for the youth.

The newly established paper industry, operated by IME Group, aims to produce paper from recycled materials, reducing Nepal’s dependence on imports. The industry is expected to create around 300 jobs.

Oli also reiterated his commitment to completing key infrastructure projects, including the Postal Highway and Sunkoshi-Marin Diversion, as part of his government’s broader development agenda.
