MAHOTTARI: CPN-Maoist Center Chair and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ visited the ancestral home of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah on Thursday morning.
Leading a delegation of Maoist leaders, Dahal reached Ekdara Rural Municipality, Mahottari, where Shah’s ancestral house is located.
The visit was part of the Maoist Center’s Tarai Madhes Awareness Campaign, which aims to strengthen its political outreach in the region.
Interestingly, Shah’s ancestral home is currently being used as the office of Ekdara Rural Municipality, as it has been rented out to the local government.
Addressing a gathering held at the house, Dahal urged for collective efforts to maintain stability and develop the country.
“We have arrived at Balen Shah’s ancestral home, the house of his father and uncles. This visit brings me joy. I hope Balenji is listening—we all must work together to build this nation,” he said.
During the event, Dahal interacted with locals and met with victims of predatory lending, commonly known as ‘metered rate victims’.
He acknowledged their grievances and assured that the Maoist Center remains committed to addressing their issues.
“Despite our efforts to enact laws and establish mechanisms to resolve the crisis, the struggle continues. This is a nationwide issue that demands a long-term solution,” he said.
Loan shark victims in Mahottari expressed frustration, stating that the government has not adequately addressed their suffering, and they continue to endure financial exploitation.
The visit is seen as part of the Maoist Center’s attempt to reconnect with the grassroots in the Terai region, especially ahead of potential political realignments in the country.
