Govt misusing state power to target Lamichhane: Prachanda

KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who is also the chairman of the Maoist Center, has stated that the current government only appears strong when it seeks to exact revenge.

Speaking at a House of Representatives meeting on Thursday, Dahal remarked that the case involving Rastriya Swatantra Party Chair Rabi Lamichhane exemplifies this trend.

“The government shows strength only when it seeks revenge. The most notable example of this is Rabi Lamichhane,” he said.

“He (Lamichhane), who was not directly involved in the embezzlement of funds from cooperatives, is now being portrayed as the largest cooperative fraudster in the country. Those who once offered to make him Prime Minister are now conspiring to undermine him, even by threatening the judiciary. This misuse of state power is evident.”

Dahal emphasized that state authority has been misused in the case of Lamichhane.

He also pointed out that since Speaker Devraj Ghimire has been granted bail by the court, there is no justification for suspending Lamichhane’s membership in Parliament.

“I urge the honorable Speaker to consider: how constitutional and just is the suspension of Lamichhane from Parliament after the courts have granted him bail?” he said.

“If allegations of money laundering are driven by political vendetta and prejudice, and the MP post is suspended as a result, how could such actions be misused in the future?”
