KATHMANDU: Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ the chairman of the main opposition party, Maoist Center, has stated that the people are dissatisfied with the current government, while the middlemen are content.
However, he asserted that this situation will not last long and promised to form a new government.
Speaking at a House of Representatives meeting on Thursday, Prachanda said, “The vested interests think that the immunity they gained by ‘purchasing’ the government will be permanent. The state resources and assets they have seized won’t last forever.”
“Today, from this rostrum, I challenge you—these files will be reopened. We will reopen these criminal files with the power of the people. We will start again, serving democracy and good governance. We will dismantle the nexus of middlemen and politics once more,” he warned.
In this context, Chairman Prachanda criticized the government’s actions at the Nepal Electricity Authority, calling it the most blatant example of mafia control over the government in Nepal’s political history.
“What the government has done at the Nepal Electricity Authority is the most overt case of mafia control over the government in our political history,” said Prachanda.
“The shameful obstruction by the minister and the prime minister in collecting premium fees from industries consuming electricity through dedicated and trunk lines proves the mafia’s power and the government’s helplessness.”
He continued, “The prime minister and the middlemen did everything they could to stop the collection of fees—what they could have done and what they should not have done. Did the Prime Minister not insult the NEA from the podium?”
Prachanda also criticized the government’s dismissal of board members who had insisted that disconnected lines should not be reconnected without ensuring fee collection.
He highlighted the misuse of the Electricity Regulatory Commission, the creation of a ministerial office within the NEA, and the repeated abuse of NEA Executive Director Kulman Ghising with calls for his removal.
Additionally, he pointed out the formation of an illegal committee to investigate the electricity fee arrears of trunk lines, which was set up without requiring a deposit for review.
Prachanda condemned the unnecessary pressure placed on the NEA to bear the expenses of this illegal committee.
