KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Vice-Chair Ram Bahadur Thapa has alleged that regressive forces are attempting to weaken the leadership of democratic political parties to push their counter-revolutionary agenda.
Speaking at an interaction program organized by Press Chautari Nepal on Friday, Thapa said that UML’s upcoming 11th General Convention is “not an ordinary convention but a decisive political moment against counter-revolution.”
He claimed that certain forces, motivated by the belief that counter-revolution succeeds only by weakening party leadership, are trying to displace legitimate leadership within political parties.
“Attempts are underway to remove party leadership. Reactionary elements believe their success depends on replacing existing leadership,” he said.
Thapa accused unnamed groups of targeting UML through a divide and rule strategy, aiming to dismantle its top leadership and install a favorable new generation under the pretext of succession. To defeat such efforts, he stressed that the 11th General Convention must serve as a platform for unity.
“Reactionary forces want to destroy our leadership, but we seek to protect it. This is not a time for displacement—it is a time for unity and consolidation. If necessary, the statute should be amended to bring everyone together,” he said.
Thapa praised party Chair KP Sharma Oli, crediting him for strengthening the communist movement, expanding UML’s organizational base and leading Nepal to secure recognition as a developing country.
“Even after reactionaries attempted to split the party, UML emerged as the largest party in terms of votes. Nepal achieved developing nation status under Oli’s leadership. His continued leadership remains a national necessity,” he said.
Warning against premature and unnecessary candidacy announcements, Thapa said the convention must elect a consensus-based leadership team to avoid divisions.
He also hinted at his own role in the upcoming leadership structure. “The current situation suggests that both the party and the country need my contribution. I expect to play a role in the leadership that emerges from the convention,” he said.
Thapa further claimed that Western powers were using the Gen-Z movement as a cover to destabilize Nepal, alleging that foreign plans included “bringing Western military influence into the country.”
He urged party cadres to remain alert, stating that safeguarding leadership, unity and continuity is essential for UML and the nation at this critical juncture.
