Milk production increases in Tanahun

DAMAULI: Milk production has increased in Tanahun as farmers’ interest in animal husbandry continues to grow. According to the district’s Livestock Service Office, farmers have been increasingly attracted to livestock farming due to subsidy programs introduced by local governments, veterinary hospitals, and animal service expert centers.

Office Chief Robinson Adhikari reported that 74,755 metric tons of milk were produced in the district in fiscal year 2024/25. In the previous fiscal year 2023/24, production stood at 73,572 metric tons, indicating an increase of 1,182 metric tons.

The office stated that the district currently has 13,992 milch cows and 21,503 milch buffaloes, with numbers rising by 304 and 261 respectively compared to the previous year.

Wool production has also seen growth. The district produced 289 kg of wool in fiscal year 2024/25, up from 273 kg in 2023/24. The total number of sheep in the district stands at 723.

Tanahun has achieved self-sufficiency in milk, meat, and eggs. The district produces 118.54 liters of milk per capita, surpassing the per capita requirement of 91 liters. It also produces 14.41 kg of meat against the requirement of 14 kg, and 83 eggs per capita, exceeding the annual requirement of 48.

This reflects surpluses of 27.54 liters of milk, 0.41 kg of meat, and 35 eggs per person. However, the district remains far from self-sufficient in fish production, with only 0.28 kg available per capita against a requirement of 7 kg.
